Former CBI Boss to Address East Mids Business Leaders

The former Director-General of the Confederation of British Industry John Cridland CBE will express optimism about the British economy at a briefing of East Midlands business leaders on Friday 27th November.

John Cridland’s appearance at the Duncan & Toplis Directors’ Briefing at the Belton Woods Hotel near Grantham will be one of his first speaking engagements since his retirement from his role at the CBI earlier this month.

The event, which will also welcome Minister of State for Skills Nick Boles MP as a headline speaker, offers high-level advice and insights to business leaders from across the East Midlands. This year is the seventh annual Duncan & Toplis Directors’ Briefing and the biggest yet as it has attracted more than 150 business leaders from across the region.

“I will be expressing optimism about the British economy and the progress that has been made on rebalancing towards an investment-led growth model, notwithstanding current global headwinds” said Mr Cridland.

“We are seeing some new politics at present, with interventions in business such as the National Living Wage and the apprenticeships levy. I will also be speaking about two prominent issues facing businesses in the next year, namely the EU referendum and English devolution.”

John Cridland CBE was brought up in Boston, Lincolnshire and attended Boston Grammar School before reading history at Christ’s College Cambridge. Having been with the CBI since 1982, he was Deputy Director-General from 2000 to 2010 and Director-General for the following five years. After becoming the CBI’s youngest ever director in 1991 he went on to negotiate the UK’s first national minimum wage and entry into the European Union’s social chapter on employment conditions.

Adrian Reynolds, Managing Director at Duncan & Toplis, said that the Directors’ Briefing promises to be an essential event for business leaders across the region.

“We have an extremely well informed and influential line-up of speakers who are sure to provide our audience with an insightful commentary on the commercial landscape,” he said.

“They will draw on their business acumen and experience to advise our audience on how businesses can lead from the front and take full advantage of the brightening economic outlook.”
