Barberá Bound for Lincolnshire in Cadwell Park Debut
The new-look Quattro Plant JG Speedfit Kawasaki team will be out in full force at Cadwell Park this weekend for round eight of the Bennetts British Superbike Championship.
After signing for the team for the remainder of the season, Héctor Barberá will make his Cadwell Park debut alongside Ben Currie, who will also be competing at the circuit for the first time on a Superbike.
Both riders will be looking to secure as many points as possible to help push them up the table before the triple-header finale at Brands Hatch GP.
In 2018 Currie took his fifth Supersport win of the year at the famous Lincolnshire circuit, fondly nicknamed the ‘Mini-Nürburgring’ and will be hoping for similar success on the Superbike.
Sidecar teams Ricky Stevens/Ryan Charlwood and Ben Holland/Lee Watson will also be in action at Cadwell Park in the Molson Group British Sidecar Championship.
With eight races remaining, and double points on offer at the Brands finale, this will be a crucial round for Stevens/Charlwood if they are to achieve their aim of finishing third in the championship.
While Holland/Watson have struggled to get off the bottom of the table so far this season owing to technical problems, their teammates have fared much better in recent rounds, securing lap records at Knockhill and Thruxton.
Héctor said: “I’ve done a couple of laps already and the track is very, very good – it’s fantastic! It’s different to anything I’ve ever experienced before but I think it will be possible to achieve some very fast laps because the track is very technical.
“I’m looking forward to learning and understanding the track during the test on Thursday and finding the best lines ahead of the weekend.”
Ben said: “Cadwell Park has always been a good hunting ground for me so I’m feeling very confident going into this weekend. We still need to find a setting on the bike I’m totally comfortable with so there’s a couple of things we want to try but I’ve been training harder than ever and I’m in a really good place.
“The atmosphere at Cadwell is unbelievable as it’s like an amphitheatre with crowds on all sides; you can really feel a buzz. It’s going to be more challenging on a Superbike as it’s such a narrow circuit with crests and jumps but if I can get a nice rhythm and a flow we should do well.”
Pete Extance, team owner, said: “Cadwell Park is always a great event but without doubt it’s the trickiest circuit of the season and unique in its layout.
“Ben has ridden the circuit in Supersport but it’s going to be very different on the big Superbike and Héctor will have never seen a racetrack like Cadwell before, so we are under no illusions – it’s going to be difficult to learn!
“Thankfully we have a three-hour test on Thursday evening which the team need to put to good use.”
Ricky said: “After a tough start to the season we’re determined to make up for lost time by securing as many podium points as possible in the remaining four rounds.
“Although Cadwell Park has not been kind to us in the past, we’re hoping we can lay those ghosts to rest this weekend.”
Ben Holland said: “We’ve been plagued by mechanical issues in the first half of the season so we’re just hoping for a trouble-free weekend!
“It’s certainly not an easy circuit on the sidecar as it’s a mix of long, fast-flowing corners and tight, twisty sections but we’re looking forward to the challenge!”
