Injured Swan Given a Second Chance
An injured swan that was found by chance and brought into Secret World Wildlife Rescue in East Huntspill, Somerset, has earnt herself the nickname Serendipity.
Serendipity, which means ‘events happening by chance in a beneficial way’, was found alone in the middle of a road in Glastonbury at around 7am on Tuesday 26th September.
At this time of year, wet roads at night can look like rivers to swans flying overhead which can confuse them.
Animal carer Josie Nott, who assessed Serendipity when she arrived at Secret World, said: “Wet roads look like landing strips to swans. Serendipity was found sitting in the middle of a road early this morning after the mist had cleared. It was lucky that she hadn’t wandered off and we could bring her in for treatment.”
When Serendipity was brought in she was severely dehydrated and was given water immediately. After an initial assessment, she was found to have some superficial scuffs to her legs and feet, as well as a lump on the right side of her head. This might have been caused by a road traffic accident, or it could be an internal growth.
For now, Serendipity has been given food and water and made comfortable, and she will see the vet for further assessment later today (Wednesday).
Josie has this advice for anyone who comes across an injured swan: “Please don’t attempt to pick it up yourself. Instead, stay with it and call Secret World for help on 01278 783250.”
