Quality Shines Through for St Hugh’s

Almost 100 per cent of patients said they would recommend HMT St Hugh’s Hospital in Grimsby, according to figures published in its latest Quality Account.

Despite a recent Care Quality Commission (CQC) report on the state of the health and care sector in England warning that health and care services across the country are being fully stretched, patient satisfaction at St Hugh’s is high.

In fact, 99.3% said they would recommend treatment at the hospital to their friends or family and 92.9% rated their experience as excellent.

The annual Quality Account report, which details the clinical performance of the hospital between 1st April 2016 and 31st March 2017, has been published following a series of investments made in its people, training and systems.

It outlines key performance indicators, patient satisfaction results, patient safety outcomes and audit results under the five characteristics of quality: safe, caring, effective, responsive, and well led.

Hospital Director Ashley Brown said: “We have significantly changed the way we approach clinical governance, and I’m glad to see this is having a positive impact on our patients.

“For example, we’ve introduced a Quality Dashboard, where the results of audits, complaints and incidents can be reviewed regularly to share lessons learned, compare trends and benchmark standards.”

This year the hospital had its first Clinical Commissioning Group inspection which is driving compliance with hygiene, risk assessment, clinical practice and medicines. And in January the hospital also announced its commitment to staff development by doubling its training budget.

Ashley continued: “Earlier this year we created two new senior leadership posts, a Peri-Operative Care Manager and a Quality and Improvement Manager, to further strengthen our structure.

“In addition, Claire Panton was recruited as Human Resources Officer to develop our HR function and Gary Allington was appointed as our dedicated Health Promotion Officer to identify community partnership opportunities.”

St Hugh’s Hospital is owned by registered charity the Healthcare Management Trust (HMT) and uses its surplus profits to fund development projects and support other charitable causes around dementia and promoting healthy lifestyles.

HMT has so far invested over £1.1m in 11 dementia PhD research projects and has been working closely with Cleethorpes-based Friendship at Home, which delivers activities for older people – including a therapeutic choir.

This commitment to supporting those living with dementia and their families is ongoing and is outlined in the Quality Account as part of HMT’s strategy for the next five years.
