Quattro Plant Kawasaki On Course for Success at Snetterton
Glenn Irwin will be hoping for a repeat performance of his podium win in 2018 when he travels to Snetterton for round six of the Bennetts British Superbike Championship this weekend (19th to 21st July).
In 2018 Glenn secured second place after an exciting battle with eventual winner Leon Haslam, who was riding for Glenn’s current team – Quattro Plant JG Speedfit Kawasaki.
Despite not having had the most promising start to the 2019 championship, Glenn has been steadily improving and came away with two more top ten finishes during the previous round at Knockhill, equalling his best result of the season so far.
With four rounds to go until the Showdown, the Carrickfergus man will be coming out fighting at Snetterton 300 which is one of his all-time favourite circuits.
Glenn will be joined by teammate Ben Currie who has been struggling since crashing heavily at Oulton Park resulting in multiple breaks in his left foot as well as damage to the knee ligaments in the same leg.
After being out for two rounds, Ben returned to racing at Knockhill but was forced to retire early from both races owing to the weather and the resulting difficult track conditions.
However, now his foot has improved after the three-week break, the Australian is looking forward to getting his season back under way.
Sidecar teams Ricky Stevens/Ryan Charlwood and Ben Holland/Lee Watson will also be competing this weekend in round five of the Molson Group British Sidecar Championship.
Ricky Stevens/Ryan Charlwood secured an excellent second-place finish and set a new lap record in the opening race at Knockhill, but their luck ran out in race three when they clipped the kerb and were t-boned by another outfit on the eighth lap.
Similarly, Ben Holland/Lee Watson were beset by misfortune at the last round. They were involved in an incident in race one finishing in 18th and had to retire early in race three after suffering mechanical failure.
Glenn Irwin said: “I’ve been suffering with a virus recently but I’m hoping to be fit and well in time for this weekend. With only four rounds left until the Showdown we need to make every round count.
“Getting on the podium at Snetterton was a turning point for me last season and I’m hoping I can do just as well on the Kawasaki.”
Ben Currie said: “I’m not quite back to full fitness as my foot is still tender but the gains I’ve made over recent weeks compared to how I was feeling at Knockhill have been tremendous.
“My foot is ten times better than it was and I have been training at full intensity. I’m feeling a lot more confident on the bike and I’m looking forward to the challenge of riding a Superbike around Snetteron 300 for the first time.
“I won my first ever BSB Superstock 600cc race at Snetterton and I really like the circuit as it’s a big, fast-flowing track which suits my style of riding. But every circuit is a first for me on the Superbike so I’m looking forward to seeing how my bike reacts.”
Pete Extance, team owner, said: “With the season at the halfway point it really is time for us to show what we are capable of. It’s been the most difficult season at BSB that I can remember, especially after an amazing 2018 championship winning year.
“Snetterton was a happy hunting ground for the team last year and we will be looking to start turning things around for both riders. They say tough times will make you stronger – well I certainly hope that’s the case!
“The staff are working just as hard if not harder in 2019 to make things happen so fingers crossed their efforts will be repaid soon.”
Ricky Stevens said: “We’ve had to make some major repairs to the bodywork this week, which has been a huge task especially when we’ve also got our day jobs to do, but the team has worked really hard and pulled out all the stops.
“Our previous form, when we have been able to race this season, shows we have pace, it’s just frustrating at the minute as we’ve suffered such bad luck! But our luck has to change at some point and we hope it’s going to be this weekend!”
Ben Holland said: “We’ve had a new engine fitted following the problems we suffered at Knockhill so hopefully we can get our season back on track and finish both races without any glitches!
“Snetterton 300 is suited to sidecar racing as it’s fast and free-flowing so we’re looking forward to a successful weekend for both teams.”
