St Hugh’s Secures Deal to Continue its Support for Cycling

HMT St Hugh’s Hospital in Grimsby has agreed a two-year extension of its sponsorship of a club that encourages youngsters to take up cycling and lead an active lifestyle.

The not-for-profit hospital has been sponsoring North East Lincs Lindsey (NEL Lindsey) Go-Ride since 2014 and will continue to do so until at least 2020.

As the young rider contingent of Lindsey Road Cycling Club, Go-Ride aims to develop cyclists from the ages of five to 16 and hosts twice-monthly sessions for all abilities.

It has enabled some of its riders to work towards being professionals, including Joe Laverick who is now a top-ranked amateur junior and is part of Belgium’s Soenens-Booom team.

To sponsor the club, St Hugh’s uses its dedicated budget for promoting health in the North Lincolnshire area and the two-year extension has facilitated the launch of the NEL Lindsey Youth Development Programme (YDP).

Designed for riders who have progressed through the Go-Ride ranks and are racing across a variety of disciplines, including road circuit, track and time trial, the YDP has attracted two more sponsors in the form of Grimsby’s Tower Staff Construction and J.C.Cook Cycles, Humberston and Scunthorpe.

Ashley Brown, Hospital Director at St Hugh’s Hospital, said: “NEL Lindsey Go-Ride provides access to sport and, importantly, maintains participation and aligns with our charitable ethos of promoting a healthy lifestyle. As we are about to launch wellness programmes to support the ageing population, it makes perfect sense to extend this valuable partnership.

“Providing access to sport for children is just one way we’re helping to make our community healthier, by instilling the importance of exercise early on.

“It’s so rewarding to witness youngsters developing a passion for cycling and honing their skills. We have already seen one rider progress through the coaching programme onto international racing, but this doesn’t overshadow the importance of many other young people meeting new friends and developing an outdoors lifestyle.”

Go-Ride sessions take place on the second and fourth Saturdays of each month at Oasis Academy Wintringham, Weelsby Avenue, Grimsby DN32 0AZ.

Sessions are delivered from 9.30am until 11am, and 11am until 12.30pm. The former is aimed at young riders with limited experience wanting a more leisurely cycling experience, while the latter is more suited to those who have been riding for at least few months, plus those looking to compete in due course.
