Brands Hatch Beckons for Quattro Plant Kawasaki
Former Moto GP rider Héctor Barberá will be lining up alongside Glenn Irwin once again for Round 4 of the Bennetts British Superbike Championship at Brands Hatch this weekend (14th to 16th June).
Barberá impressed during his BSB debut deputising for the injured Ben Currie at Donington Park, finishing sixth in the first race and eighth in race two. After starting in pole position in race three, he unfortunately slipped off at the Old Hairpin while battling with the front pack.
Similarly, Glenn Irwin will be looking to improve on his performance in Round 3. The Carrickfergus rider has had a challenging start to the season but is feeling confident ahead of Brands Hatch after finishing ninth in the opening race at Donington Park – his best result of the season so far.
Glenn will be hoping for a repeat of 2018, when he secured his first British Superbike win of the season at Brands Hatch taking victory in the opening race of the triple-header finale in October.
The world-famous Kent circuit will also play host to Round 2 of the Molson Group British Sidecar Championship.
Former champions Ricky Stevens/Ryan Charlwood were joined by new teammates Ben Holland/Lee Watson for the first time during the opening round of the championship at Oulton Park back in April.
The teams qualified in third and eighth respectively but unfortunately, they were both forced out of the 12-lap race early on in proceedings owing to technical issues.
Ricky and Ryan’s outfit had an issue with the clutch while Ben and Lee suffered an electrical misfire.
Ben Currie, who is still recovering after breaking bones in both feet and damaging his knee ligaments, is hoping to return to the BSB championship for Round 5 at Knockhill (28th to 30th June).
Glenn Irwin said: “We had a positive test at Knockhill on Monday, so I’m looking forward to this weekend. The season hasn’t started as we hoped, we’ve been unlucky with the bike which as has had a fundamental issue, but hopefully this is the turning point.
“I’ve got good memories of Brands Hatch where I got on the podium four times last season, including one first-place finish.”
Héctor Barberá said: “I’m very happy to be returning to the Bennetts British Superbike Championship for Round 4.
“It’s not going to be easy as Brands Hatch has a particularly challenging layout but thankfully, after a great debut at Donington, I haven’t got so much to learn for the bike!”
Team owner Pete Extance added: “Hector has never been to Brands Hatch so he will be hoping to get some car and scooter laps on the track on Wednesday and Thursday, so he knows where he is going ready for free practice on Friday morning!
“Glenn certainly knows his way around having taken a win there at the final round of 2018 and we will all be looking to getting him back to the podium positions that we know he is capable of.”
Ricky Stevens said: “We couldn’t have foreseen the problem with the clutch we experienced during the opening race of the season as it was fine during qualifying; it was just one of those things.
“The clutch has been replaced and we now need to put that disappointment behind us and start the season proper at Brands Hatch. Ryan and I are looking forward to getting some more laps under our belts and finishing what we started at Oulton Park.”
Ben Holland said: “We were really pleased with our result during qualifying at Oulton Park – especially since I was still recovering from a broken collar bone!
“Unfortunately, the outfit suffered an electrical misfire caused by a faulty switch which meant we had to retire early. However, that issue has been resolved and now we’re raring to go. Both teams are looking forward to what we hope will be a successful weekend.”
