Double Celebration for St Hugh’s Hospital

The team at St Hugh’s Hospital is celebrating the hospital’s 80th birthday just days after an independent report praised the healthcare facility for its short waiting times and quality of patient care.

The not-for-profit hospital on Peaks Lane in Grimsby has received praise following the independent NHS Partners Network (NHSPN) report Independent Sector Providers Caring for NHS Patients, which was published in August.

The NHSPN is the representative body for independent healthcare providers like St Hugh’s and the report gives an overview of the sector’s performance in respect of the care given to NHS patients.

Despite being an independent hospital, 83 per cent of patients treated at St Hugh’s are NHS referrals. A growing number of those NHS patients are selecting St Hugh’s thanks to the national Choose and Book scheme, which allows patients a say in where they receive their treatment.

The report measured the quality of care in five areas including patient experience, clinical quality, patient outcomes and safety, efficiency indicators, and the contribution of the sector shown by numbers of patients treated.

St Hugh’s Hospital was the fifth and 17th highest performing facility for a patient’s average health gain following knee and hip replacements respectively, according to the Patient Reported Outcome Measures (PROMs) collected by NHS Digital.

In regard to waiting times, the report illustrates that independent facilities – on average – see patients within six weeks, while NHS facilities take almost seven.

Among the other highlights of the report are the results of the Government’s preferred measurement of patient satisfaction, the Friends and Family Test (FFT), collected monthly since April 2013. Around 99 per cent of patients would be ‘extremely likely’ or ‘likely’ to recommend independent providers compared with a national average of around 96 per cent.

Ashley Brown, St Hugh’s Hospital Director, said: “I’m delighted that we’ve been recognised in the latest NHS Partners Network report for our commitment to supporting the local NHS Trust, improving the treatment outcomes for our patients – particularly those receiving hip and knee replacements, and reducing waiting times.

“We’ve been working hard to forge closer links with our local trust and have recently been working more collaboratively with NHS colleagues to reduce waiting times for patients.

“We were recently invited to join the North East Lincolnshire ICP Forum, so we can work together to improve the health of the local population through the delivery of integrated health and support services to tackle the causes of ill health.

“This report comes just as we are celebrating our 80th birthday, so it’s the cherry on top of the cake for us. The team at St Hugh’s has lots to be proud of this year and lots to look forward to in the future.”
