Homeless Centre Taking Shape Thanks to Generous Grant
YMCA Lincolnshire has received a grant of £100K from the Garfield Weston Foundation for its state-of-the-art Nomad Centre, due to open this Autumn.
The money has helped YMCA Lincolnshire get even closer to its £1.6m completion target for the new centre on St Rumbold’s Street in Lincoln, which will provide emergency accommodation and specialist support for the city’s homeless.
Consisting of 22 individual en suite bedrooms and specialist day facilities, the centre will upgrade and replace the existing Nomad shelter on Monks Road in the city which is currently open between 8.30pm and 8am.
Rachael Baxter, Community Engagement Manager at YMCA Lincolnshire, said: “As operators of the only direct-access emergency overnight accommodation in Lincolnshire, we’re excited to see the new centre taking shape thanks to the generosity of our funders.
“The Nomad Centre will not only provide private and dignified overnight accommodation but a safe space for people to retreat to during the day, with wraparound support when they can otherwise find themselves vulnerable, isolated and at risk.
“We are so grateful to everyone who is helping to turn this vision into a reality and want to thank the Garfield Weston Foundation for their support.”
The Garfield Weston Foundation is a charitable grant-making foundation established by the Weston family in 1958. It supports a wide range of causes across the UK, donating over £70million each year.
Director Philippa Charles said: “The Trustees were delighted to support YMCA Lincolnshire’s new Nomad Centre. This will provide much needed support to the city’s homeless and will have a positive impact on Lincoln.”

About the Garfield Weston Foundation
- The Garfield Weston Foundation is a family-founded, grant-making charity which supports causes across the UK with grants totalling around £70million annually. It has donated over £1billion to charities since it was established in 1958.
- One of the most respected charitable institutions in the UK, the Weston Family Trustees are descendants of the founder and take a highly active and hands-on approach.
- The Foundation’s funding comes from an endowment of shares in the family business which includes Twinings, Primark, Kingsmill (all part of Associated British Foods Plc) and Fortnum & Mason, among others – a successful model that still endures today; as the business has grown so too have the charitable donations.
- From small community organisations to large national institutions, the Foundation supports a broad range of charities and activities that make a positive impact in the communities in which they work. More than 1,800 charities across the UK benefit each year from the Foundation’s grants.
