IoD to Celebrate Platinum Jubilee with Grand Summer Ball
Lincolnshire business leaders will be celebrating the region’s historic links with the armed forces and the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee at the IoD’s grand summer ball next month.
The ball, which is the first major in-person IoD event in the region since the beginning of the Covid-19 pandemic, will be held on 16th September at the International Bomber Command Centre (IBCC) in Lincoln and feature entertainment from the Rutland Big Band.
As well as marking Queen Elizabeth II’s Platinum Jubilee and her role as head of the UK’s Armed Forces the event will celebrate the IoD’s rich connections to defence in Lincolnshire.
Michelle Allison, Chair of the Greater Lincolnshire and Rutland branch of the IoD, said: “The IoD is a thriving community for directors and business leaders across the UK and provides a place to share knowledge, advance professional skills and become an influence to change.
“Open to both IoD members and non-members, the summer ball will be a great opportunity to connect with like-minded people and of course have a good old knees-up at the same time. So get dressed up and join us for this jubilee-themed celebration of togetherness!”
The after-dinner speaker will be Army Air Corps veteran Alan Whittle MBE who is also Director of Strategy and Plans for Lincoln-based defence company Inzpire.
During his 32-year army aviation career Alan has served as a Lynx Flight Commander and helicopter pilot on operational tours in Northern Ireland, Kuwait, Iraq, Bosnia, Kosovo and Afghanistan, a weapons and electronic warfare instructor, senior flying instructor and commanding officer of the UK Apache Conversion Squadron.
During his talk Alan will be sharing the lessons he’s learnt from a career in army aviation which have helped him make a success of a career in business.
Other special guests include Nicky van der Drift, Chief Executive of the International Bomber Command Centre in Lincoln.
Guests will also be able to enjoy drinks and networking on the lawn at the IBCC, a delicious three-course dinner, a marquee bar and live entertainment from jazz ensemble the Rutland Big Band.

Notes for editors:
- The Institute of Directors is a non-party political organisation, founded in 1903, with approximately 26,000 members. Membership includes directors from right across the business spectrum – from media to manufacturing, professional services to the public and voluntary sectors. Members include CEOs of large corporations as well as entrepreneurial directors of start-up companies.
- The IoD was granted a Royal Charter in 1906, instructing it to “represent the interests of members and of the business community to government and in the public arena, and to encourage and foster a climate favourable to entrepreneurial activity and wealth creation.”
- The Charter also tasks the Institute with promoting “for the public benefit high levels of skill, knowledge, professional competence and integrity on the part of directors”, which the IoD seeks to achieve through its training courses and publications on corporate governance.
