Forever Grateful to Shooting Star
Ralph Waldo Emerson once said that “It is not length of life, but depth of life”, something that I never quite understood until now. I had only just turned 17 when I applied for a BA (Hons) degree in Media Production at the University of Lincoln and now having just turned 21, I am about to graduate at Lincoln Cathedral next week.
A little bit about my past – I had been studying Media Studies at A-level for two years, followed by three years at degree level, and even when finishing my degree, I still had no idea what I wanted to pursue as a career. It seemed that the saying “time will tell” wasn’t very apt with regard to my future.
With a degree under my belt and a range of previous experience in the media industry but still no true passion for anything, I was quickly running out of career options. I overheard a conversation about Shooting Star one day, discussing how they were one of the best PR and marketing companies in Lincoln. Instantly intrigued by the thought of a career in the field, I contacted Jez and managed to secure myself a two-week placement at the end of summer.
Having little or no experience in the PR and marketing industry, I wasn’t sure what to expect from my placement. In all honesty, I didn’t expect to be as trusted as I was! The team gave me multiple tasks ranging from drafting and distributing press releases to helping create marketing material for the company itself.
On my first day I was asked to sit in on a catch-up meeting with Jez, Nikhita and Mike and instantly I felt like part of the team, which made the following days of my placement much less daunting and provided me with a new-found confidence!
My time at Shooting Star has provided me with something that no amount of education ever could – unforgettable, invaluable, hands-on experience. Within the space of two weeks, the opportunities that Shooting Star have given me have changed my goals completely and I am positive that I now want to pursue a career in PR and marketing.
So, as I get ready to leave what has been the most remarkable experience for me in terms of my future goals, I now look forward to continuing my studies at the University of Lincoln studying my master’s degree in Marketing with Luxury Brands, and it’s all thanks to Shooting Star! They truly have given me a depth of life in the PR and marketing industry this fortnight and I wish the whole team the very best. I can’t thank them enough for everything.
