Be Prepared to Face the Media

Media training1 e1344442582449The Shooting Star PR team had a lot of fun giving some media training to colleagues from the Lincolnshire Sports Partnership yesterday.

Our chosen charity for 2012 is having a busy year, with the Olympic and Paralympic Games causing phones to ring off the hook at its Lincoln offices.

We spent the day with 11 of the partnership’s staff, talking them through some theory and offering tips and advice on handling the media and giving interviews.

We then dived into a couple of practice sessions so staff could get used being interviewed by journalists either over the phone or face to face for print, radio or TV.

We used fictitious scenarios, but they were a useful exercise for the four members of staff who volunteered to be grilled by journalists hungry for a headline.

They all handled the interviews exceptionally well, but they would be the first to admit that constant practice is the key to coming across well in the media.

If you’re nervous about giving interviews, unsure why you should talk to journalists or in the dark about how to start writing a press release, perhaps some media training is what you need.

Our courses cater for everyone, from business start-ups who need some pointers on the importance of PR to senior managers and chief executives who regularly have to face microphones and TV cameras.

All our account managers were working journalists before they moved into PR so we’re uniquely qualified to guide our clients through the minefield of media relations.
