Three Top Tips for Social Media

TwitterAnyone can do social media, right? Find your friends, write a few tweets and upload a couple of #selfies for good measure. But for businesses to succeed online there’s much more to it than that.

1 Have a plan

Social media is here to stay. If your business hasn’t considered using social media yet, now is the time. Are you too scared to get active online, in case a tirade of negativity comes your way, or have you created an online presence that doesn’t seem to be having much impact?

Understanding who your audience is and what you want to achieve is key. Whether it’s driving traffic to you website or increasing your sales, social media shouldn’t be considered an add-on. To succeed it will need to work alongside and complement your existing business plan.

2 Get social, create conversations

Social media is a torrent of ongoing conversations. So how can you make yourself heard?
Do your research. Find out what interests your target audience: what are they talking about? When are they talking about it?

The hard sell isn’t going to work. Share information that your customers will find useful and interesting, start conversations and don’t ignore people when they talk to you – that’s just rude.

You’re the expert in your field; use your knowledge to build trust and customers will come to you.

3 Evaluate

Regularly evaluate your activity. Find out what works and what doesn’t. You don’t need to be a technical wizard to do this – simply asking your customers where they heard about you will provide a valuable insight into what works and what doesn’t.
