Why PR is Essential in an Era of Zero-click Searches

When it comes to SEO, keywords, meta descriptions and technical fixes are all still important, but since AI came on the scene public relations has become increasingly significant. The search engines are getting smarter, competition is tougher and brands need more than clever keywords to stand out.

Google’s AI features – like featured snippets – mean more people are getting what they need when searching without ever clicking through to a website. These ‘zero-click searches’ are reshaping the way businesses show up online – and they’re putting traditional SEO under pressure. But there’s a silver lining: brands that invest in PR are winning.

If SEO used to be about keywords and meta descriptions; now it’s about authority, trust and visibility across the whole digital landscape. And that’s exactly where PR can help. PR brings a human touch to your digital presence. Instead of relying on algorithms alone, it builds trust the ‘traditional’ way, by getting your brand into reputable publications, industry conversations and expert commentary which is now even more important to effective SEO.

PR provides high-authority links

Backlinks are the digital equivalent of someone recommending you to a colleague. If lots of credible publications link to your site, Google assumes you know what you’re talking about and lists you higher up the rankings. You can try to earn backlinks manually, of course — but that can be a time-consuming and unrewarding task. PR makes it natural.

A well placed article, thought leadership piece or expert quote in a respected publication gives you authoritative backlinks that SEO alone can’t secure. Journalists want experts and useful insights, and if you can provide them the publication will most likely link to you, so everyone wins.

A word of warning – gaining backlinks shouldn’t dominate your PR strategy. Digital PR is still public relations, and a PR’s relationships with journalists and publishers are sacrosanct.

Brand mentions add credibility

Google is obsessed with something called E-E-A-T: Experience, Expertise, Authoritativeness and Trustworthiness. Of these aspects, trust is most important, and PR helps you demonstrate to Google – and potential customers – that you’re a trusted source.

Every article, interview, podcast appearance or expert comment boosts your visibility and strengthens your reputation. Over time, Google starts recognising your brand name across the web, even without a link. The more you show up in credible places, the more Google sees you as ‘safe’. And media sites often outrank brand websites, so getting mentioned on the BBC News website, for example, puts you on page one by association.

This is especially important for service-based businesses, B2B organisations and any sector where people need convincing before they buy.

Branded searches build authority

When your name appears regularly in the media, more people search for you directly. Google loves brands that attract their own audience. Branded search demand tells the algorithm that your business is legitimate, relevant and worth ranking higher.

If users search for you by name, Google is far more likely to trust your content in zero-click search results.

PR boosts your visibility

When search results no longer guarantee traffic, your brand still needs to show up in the places your audiences look for answers. PR can help you to secure valuable media coverage in news outlets, industry publications and on influential podcasts – meeting customers where they already are.

Google registers these sources as authoritative which boosts your brand’s credibility both with people and with algorithms. It’s a bit like having multiple billboards across the digital landscape instead of relying solely on one shopfront.

Furthermore, search doesn’t just happen on Google anymore. People search on TikTok, YouTube, LinkedIn and Chat GPT, for example. A PR agency can provide you with content that can work across all these platforms. A news release could fuel a podcast conversation, a LinkedIn carousel or a TikTok talking-head clip. It’s easy to imagine how one story can result in 10 different pieces of content or ‘touchpoints’ across multiple platforms.

PR experts are best placed to write compelling content

According to Google, the most important SEO tactic is to create content that people find genuinely useful. Everyone has their own idea of what this means, but the best pieces tend to have a few things in common:

  • They are simple, clear and easy to read
Write the way you’d naturally speak. Keep your sentences concise, avoid jargon, and make sure everything is spelled correctly. Break longer pieces into shorter paragraphs, use sub-headings, and guide people through the page so they don’t get lost.
  • They are original
Share what you know. Don’t copy other websites or recycle what’s already out there. Fresh, authentic insight is far more valuable and search engines can spot the difference.
  • They’re kept up to date
Review and rewrite older articles regularly. Update anything that’s out of date, and if something is no longer relevant, remove it.
  • They’re genuinely useful and trustworthy
Write with your target audience in mind. Offer advice that helps, back up your points with expertise or case studies, and make sure you provide the answers to the questions they’re likely to ask.
