Student Life Unfiltered in Inspiring New Book
An inspiring new book which lifts the lid on student life and the challenges to be overcome will be published in March.
The book entitled ‘The Truth Behind the Filter’ is the second instalment of ‘You Are A Limited Edition’, which was published in September 2020, featuring 25 student authors who shared their stories to inspire, empower and provide reassurance to their peers.
The new book is a collaboration by 50 students from across the UK to share their voice and offer insight into their lived experiences.
Covering a diverse variety of themes, from mental health to discrimination, imposter syndrome to student parenthood, the book offers stories detailing the various barriers the authors have overcome, as they step out from behind the filter.
Themes in the book include toxic masculinity, disability, mental health, social mobility, LGBTQ+, racism, imposter syndrome and bereavement.
Tonia Galati, Director of TG Consulting, the company behind the book, said: “In a digital age, where filtering images and curating a reality to share with the world is the norm, many young people feel that they must live up to the impossible standards that they are exposed to every day.
“This is having a detrimental effect on the wellbeing of the younger generations, eroding their self-esteem and sense of belonging, leading them to shy away from telling their truth and asking for help when they most need it.
“‘The Truth Behind The Filter’ is joined by our charitable partner, The Calzy Foundation which campaigns for more accessible and visible peer-to-peer support for young adults suffering trauma or crisis in their mental health.”
Speaking about the 50 student collaborators, Tonia continued: “As you can imagine, the young people involved are all extremely excited and a little nervous about being published authors and their stories being out in the public domain.
“But their stories are not only an inspiring read but also a means of reassurance for those who may find that the stories resonate with them.
“This instalment solidifies to us the importance of our mission: inspiring connection and collaboration between young people and their organisations and educators by empowering and helping young people realise their potential. We understand fully that there are many hurdles accompanying this journey, and passionately feel that they should not go by unnoticed.”
All profits from the sale of the book will go towards supporting those who face barriers to employment.
Alan Stuart, founder of The Calzy Foundation, said: “The Calzy Foundation is driven by a desire to cease the ‘muting’ of young voices. We need to move towards open, honest and trusted dialogue around young people’s mental health and well-being. They need to be heard – we all need to listen and as a society, we need to be more proactive in providing critical support to our young generation.
“We are proud and honoured to be a partner with TG Consulting. At the heart of their ethos and work is the provision of a platform and space for young people to truly ‘tell it how it is.’ Together we can move towards a society where young people, challenged by circumstance, trauma or societal bias can confidently say: ‘today is going to be okay – tomorrow now seems possible.’”
The book will be available on Amazon and in all good bookshops worldwide including Waterstones and W H Smith.
