Announcing the 13th Shooting Star Charity of the Year!
The search for our 13th charity to champion brought in the highest number of applications we’ve received since our Charity of the Year initiative began in 2009!
It’s always a difficult decision to make, but this year the team got behind the Bearded Fishermen, a mental health and suicide prevention charity based in Gainsborough, Lincolnshire.
Throughout 2020 we will provide pro bono marketing, PR and event support to help it raise its profile and provide the vital funds needed to run the charity.
Following their own personal mental health battles and struggles with attempted suicides and homelessness, keen anglers Rick Roberts and Mick Leyland realised there was a lack of support available and decided to launch the Bearded Fishermen
in October last year.
“We’ve got lots planned this year,” explained Rick. “We’re hoping to organise more events, broaden our reach and further expand the services we currently offer to women as well as men.
“We are thrilled that the team at Shooting Star will be supporting us with our exciting plans for 2020, our first being a black-tie event we’re in the first stages of organising.”
The charity runs a weekly ‘befriending’ support group at Connexions Community Hub in Gainsborough on a Tuesday evening. Visitors are free to drop in, speak in confidence and get help and advice on a range of issues ranging from depression to financial hardship.
All funds raised throughout this year will go towards achieving Rick and Mick’s end goal; a permanent support hub that will allow the charity to offer a regular safe space for both men and women to visit, chat in confidence and receive the assistance they need.
2020 marks the 12th
year that we have supported a local charity for 12 months with their marketing and PR. Past beneficiaries include Lincolnshire YMCA, Sophie’s Journey and Help Me, I’m Fine.
